Abstract:The system of maternity protection leave is an important measure to safeguard the rights of women of childbearing age. The paternity leave and parental leave systems of OECD countries, by combining the duration of maternity leave, job protection, and maternity patients' subsidy, greatly promote gender equality by assisting employees in balancing the conflicts between their works and families, and improving maternity protection. At present, China is facing the situation that the fertility rate is not as optimistic as expected after the comprehensive implementation of the two-child policy. Thus, how to get out of the low fertility trap has become an urgent issue. This study compares the existing maternity leave systems of OECD countries with those of China to provide references for improving the maternity leave policies in China.
