Abstract:Through the creative labor of game mods, modders can develop derivative games based on the original game. As the mods and secondary games produced through this labor satisfy players' personalized imaginations of original games, the game mod labor consequently mirrors players' dispositions toward the canonical games. To enhance player engagement metrics, game corporations appropriate player data through the exploitation of the game mod labor. Consequently, the game mod labor becomes an intermediary linking game corporations and players, with mod creators becoming unoffi cial game developers". Notably, game mod creators can accumulate economic and social capital through their mod production, gaining certain discursive power within the game ecosystem. This suggests that the game mod labor breaks through the original games' regulations on players, reconstructing power relations within the game fi eld.
